The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami, has charged the youth to focus on digital innovation and entrepreneurship, in order to increase productivity and generate greater output to the society.
The Minister made the call while delivering lecture on “Young People’s Role in Driving Digital Trends to Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” at the first NASFAT Youth Summit held virtually on Saturday.
According to Pantami, University education is only meant to validate skills, adding that Nigeria is championing a paradigm shift that lays emphasis on skills, in preference to merely having degrees without skills.
At the virtual programme, monitored by HappeningsNG, the Minister noted that Nigeria has a potent and critical mass of ‘digital natives’ , that can transform the country into a regional and global digital hub if property annexed.
He disclosed that the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, had signed an Executive Order in June 2020, advising the federal government to lay emphasis on skills rather than degrees when hiring staff.
“The curriculum vitae of today should have 2 main parts- soft skills and hard skills.
“Digital innovation and entrepreneurship can serve as a platform for creating employment for a large number of Nigerians and will support the development of the economy.
“The purpose of innovation is to give rise to new ideas and technologies, which eventually increase productivity, enabling organizations to generate greater output with the same input,” Pantami added.
One of the speakers at the summit, a lecturer at Fountain University, Osogbo, Rasheed Adebiyi, urged federal government and Universities to introduce SDGs into tertiary institution’s curriculum, so that the youth could focus and work towards the 17 identified goals.
The University Don blamed the government for slow pace of implementing SDGs’ goals, ascribing it to negligence on it’s part.
He further said that one of the ways to achieve success in the implementation of SDGs’ goals was for the federal government to devise specific national strategy for that purpose .
Adebiyi also urged politicians to hinge their blueprint of governance and policies on SDGs’ goals .
